What’s Going On When You Dream You’re Having a Dream?

No matter what the dream you’re dreaming is about, a dream where you dream you’re dreaming can seem like quite a puzzle.

This includes where you dream you’re sleeping in your bed or anywhere else.

The picture that’s presented is something like one of those M.C. Escher prints.

“Relativity” by M.C. Escher. When asked if he did drugs, Escher denied it, “My dreams are frightening enough.”

It’s like a gaze into a dimension where our laws of physics don’t apply.

It’s fair to ask, “why?” Why is this a feature of my dream?

Here are some ideas. As always, you are the best interpreter for your dream.

A dream about sleeping in your bed or somewhere else

If you see yourself sleeping in your bed in your dream, you’re likely exhausted. Your body knows it’s run down. Your subconscious is focused on the act of sleeping.

Sleep is like any other biological need. How good does water taste when your throat is parched? How about when you get some food after you feel like you’ve been starving? Your body has been craving sleep, and a dream where you’re sleeping is the equivalent of the desert traveler guzzling a gallon of ice-cold water: “Glug, glug, glug!”

If there’s any other dream that’s more natural to have, it’s hard to say. Such a dream is as natural as a sunset at the end of the day.

In the dream, the other location symbolizes something to you if you’re sleeping somewhere besides your bed. That includes if your mattress is in the middle of another place.

Say you live in New York City and take the metro every day. If you dream your bed is in the middle of New York’s Grand Central Station and commuters are rushing around you and your bed, your subconscious might be trying to soothe you. You’re already halfway to work (or wherever you travel daily). You can rest, and the other commuters will pass by.

A dream about a dream

This might be a result of your subconscious playing. Could you be suffering from a lack of fun in your waking life?

A dream like this is a puzzle. What is the dream within the dream about? What does the dreamer who’s dreaming feel about the dream?

What kind of emotion did the dream evoke?

Maybe you’re intellectually bored?

Whatever it means to you deep down, a dream within a dream is a novelty and is an expression of fun while you’re sleeping.
